SPOORLOOS   1988
(THE VANISHING )
Directed by George Sluizer
107 minutes
In French/Dutch with English subtitles

When a young Dutchman discovers that his girlfriend has gone missing during their return to Holland from a bicycling trip in France, he begins a three-year search for her that forms the basis of this unsettling psychological thriller from 1988. Stanley Kubrick said it was “the most horrifying film I’ve ever seen”.

With essentially no violence and absolutely no gore, Spoorloos achieves almost the impossible…it is able to leave the viewer in a truly shocked and dazzled state without relying on special effects nor violence. A pure thriller…and a shocker….that still packs a wallop!

This is a film which the less said the better…let’s just say it is a real gem and one of the best films to come out of Europe in the 1980s, and perhaps to come out of Holland ever…and I should say it’s based on the novel The Golden Egg by Tim Krabbe.

If you have never seen it, it’s an absolute must!
