THE IMPORTANT THING IS LOVE
(L’IMPORTANT C’EST D’AIMER) 1975
Directed by Andrezej Zulawski
110 minutes
In French with English subtitles

This explosive film from Polish director Andrezej Zulawski (Possession) stars Romy Schneider in one of her devastating performances. Zulawski comes from the Polish theater background which includes an over-wrought, intense, emotional-expressionistic acting style that is something totally different than any Hollywood acting. One of the amazing things in Zulawski’s films is that this expressive power can go off like a hidden keg of dynamite, causing everything to suddenly go really berserk/haywire.

The Important Thing is Love is a beautifully shot movie about three persons seeking to live, love and survive… Romy Schneider’s performance is stunning as a porn actress desperately in love with a man who doesn’t want to live anymore. In this film Zulawski depicts a world of bourgeois actors, pornographers, drugs and violence- a world in which love can be the only saving grace. It also boasts of fantastic acting by Romy Schneider, Fabio Testi and Jacques Dutronc along with a excellent sub-role by Klaus Kinski (at his best). It also carries a sublime musical score by Georges Delerue which is reminiscent of Godard’s Le mepris.

index

Actress Romy Schneider was absolutely right to consider this film as her major professional achievement. Zulawski is at his paramount here, because his usual romantic excesses perfectly fit the theme of the subject. And because of his background of Polish extremism, you can expect a series of highly charged emotional performances which are executed almost like electric shocks.

Once again, this gem of a film is never screened anymore these days… but it should be considered one of cinemas crowning achievements! To sum it up in just one word: spellbinding.
