HEAD ON      2004
(Gegen die Wand / Duvara karsi)
Directed by Fatih Akin
121 minutes
In German and Turkish, with English subtitles

Head-On, Fatih Akin’s gritty love drama, is rough around the edges, but filled with heart and passion. Cahit (Birol Ünel) is a middle-aged drunk whose apartment looks like it was through a world war. Sibel (Sibel Kekilli) is a suicidal woman half his age, stuck at home with repressive relatives who she can’t stand any longer. They’re two troubled Turks, adrift in modern Germany, who collide in a psychiatric hospital.

The grand plan: If Cahit will marry her, Sibel can flee her screwed-up family. As for Cahit, he won’t be alone anymore, left to mourn his dead wife and drink his life away. Gradually, their marriage of convenience starts to spiral out of control, and gradually builds to an over-the-top crescendo. A film about dreams and desperation in a world where things don’t always go how you plan them, no matter how much you need them to. A great, great film.

Winner of the top Berlin Film Festival award of 2004, HEAD-ON is an adrenaline-charged film that will make you laugh, cry, scream, and sit back in contemplation- while transposing you to the heart of Hamburg and Istanbul.

“Romeo and Juliet on speed.”
